S. 5522 — Protecting Biological Data as Critical Infrastructure Act

This section expands the responsibilities of the Director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency to oversee planning and coordination of security management for genetic data systems involving genomic sequences and other sensitive biometric data, ensure sufficient staffing, provide training to Federal personnel on related security challenges and ethical considerations, and protect biological data and critical biotechnology infrastructure. It treats such genetic data systems as critical infrastructure, requires consultation with biotechnology sector stakeholders and relevant Federal agencies on security protocols, and directs collaboration on emerging concerns such as the digital-physical boundary between genetic sequence data and physical samples.
