S. 4977 — REDACT Act

This section establishes a private cause of action permitting any aggrieved person to sue the United States for failure to withhold or redact a victim’s personally identifiable information or personal, medical, or similar files when releasing documents under the Epstein Files Transparency Act. It awards the greater of $50,000 in statutory damages or compensatory damages (including for pain and suffering) per instance, plus attorney’s fees and injunctive or declaratory relief, waives sovereign immunity, and imposes a 5-year statute of limitations from notice of the violation (or from the date of enactment for prior violations), applying to violations on or after November 19, 2025.
