This section establishes a National Science Foundation program to award merit-reviewed grants to institutions of higher education and nonprofit organizations for undergraduate research experiences in STEM disciplines during the summer, academic year, or both. It requires at least half of participants at each summer REU site to be recruited from institutions with limited STEM research opportunities, including emerging research institutions, minority-serving institutions, junior or community colleges, and EPSCoR institutions; mandates tracking of participants for employment and STEM degree completion for at least three years after the undergraduate degree; and directs stipends, mentoring, and support for student travel and accessibility.
